Successful Transitions to Permanent Residency

What is the TSS Visa?

The 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa (TSS - subclass 482) is a fantastic opportunity for skilled overseas workers to live, work, and potentially gain permanent residency (PR) in Australia. It's an employer-sponsored visa, meaning an Australian business nominates you for the role, filling a critical skills gap in their workforce.

Benefits of a TSS Visa:

  • Work and live in Australia for the duration of your visa.
  • Opportunity to apply for PR after 482 visa (transition stream available).
  • Bring your eligible family members to Australia.
  • Enjoy a high standard of living and career opportunities.

Streams of the TSS Visa:

There are three main streams for the TSS 482 visa, catering to different employment needs:

  • Short-Term Stream (up to 2 years): Ideal for short-term projects or specialized skills.
  • Medium-Term Stream (up to 4 years): Suitable for ongoing roles where your expertise is needed for a longer period.
  • Labour Agreement Stream: This applies to workers covered by a pre-arranged agreement between an employer and the Australian Government.

Eligibility for a TSS 482 Visa:

To qualify for a subclass 482 visa, you'll need to meet several key subclass 482 visa requirements:

  • Sponsored by an Australian Employer: You must have a genuine offer of full-time employment from a business with approved sponsorship.
  • Occupation Requirements: Your nominated occupation must be on the 482 visa occupation list, demonstrating a skills shortage in Australia.
  • Employer Sponsorship: Your employer must demonstrate they've actively sought qualified Australians for the role (Labour Market Testing).
  • Work Experience: You'll need to possess the relevant work experience as outlined in the nominated occupation.
  • Age: There's no strict 482 visa age limit, but some permanent residency pathways may have age requirements.
  • Health Insurance: You must have appropriate health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay.

  • Short-term stream: From AUD1,495.00
  • Medium-term stream: From AUD3,115.00
  • Labour agreement stream: From AUD3,115.00

482 Visa: Family Inclusion

The 482 temporary skill shortage visa allows you to include your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children in your visa application.

  • Eligibility for Family Sponsorship: You must be the main visa holder and meet the sponsorship requirements.

  • Benefits for Family Members: Family members can live in Australia, study (limited options), and may be eligible to work with an appropriate visa.
  • Application Timing: Family members can be included in your initial application or apply separately later.

After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which allows you to work in Australia for a specific period to gain practical experience, depending on your course and field of study.

This is a 5-year temporary visa for study purposes. The exact length of your stay will be determined by your chosen course. Primary school children entering years 1-4 are generally granted visas for a maximum of 3 years.

Yes! Changes implemented in November 2023 allow holders of the Medium-Term TSS 482 visa to apply for PR after 2 years (482 transition to pr) under the Temporary Transition stream (conditions apply).
The pathway to PR after 482 visa depends on your visa stream and eligibility. Explore the Employer Nominated Scheme (ENS) (subclass 186) or the Regional Employer Sponsored Scheme (RSMS) (subclass 187) for potential permanent residency options.
