In South Australia, joinery work falls under the broader category of building and trades licensing. Here's what you need to know about obtaining a joinery license:
License Types
There are two main types of licenses relevant to joinery work:
- Building Work Contractor's License: Required if you want to contract for joinery work.
- Building Work Supervisor's Registration: Needed to supervise joinery work.
Key Requirements
To obtain a license for joinery work in South Australia, you'll need to meet the following criteria:
- Qualifications: Complete a relevant trade certificate or equivalent qualification in joinery.
- Experience: Demonstrate sufficient on-site experience in joinery work.
- Knowledge: Pass a technical interview to assess your building knowledge.
- Financial Resources: Show that you have adequate financial resources to operate as a contractor.
- Police Check: Provide a National Police Certificate (NPC) no more than 12 months old.
Qualifications
To qualify for a joinery license in South Australia, you must complete one of the following:
- Certificate III in Joinery (CPC31920) - This is the current and preferred qualification.
- Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220)
- Certificate III in Shopfitting (CPC30120)
- Certificate III in Timber and Composites Machining (MSF30313)
- Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction (MEM30719)

Experience Requirements
In addition to the formal qualification, you must demonstrate sufficient on-site experience in joinery work. Specifically:
- You must have at least 12 months of full-time employment (or equivalent part-time) in the joinery occupation within the previous 3 years.
- If you obtained your qualification internationally or through an Australian qualification not issued through the Australian Recognition of Learning process, you need to demonstrate 3 years of full-time (or equivalent) post-qualification experience.
- If you obtained an Australian qualification issued through the Australian Recognition of Learning process, you need to demonstrate either:
- 3 years of full-time (or equivalent) post-qualification experience, OR
- 6 years of full-time (or equivalent) experience which can be either pre- or post-qualification.
Important Notes
- If you're from interstate, you may be eligible for automatic mutual recognition or need to apply through regular mutual recognition arrangements.
- All building work, including joinery, must be supervised by a registered building work supervisor.
- You must notify CBS within 14 days of any changes affecting your license, such as change of address or bankruptcy.
Digital Licenses
Once approved, you can download your digital license to your smartphone using the mySAGOV app. However, it's advisable to carry a hard copy until digital licenses become widely accepted.
