Requirements for Electrician Licence in VIC
In Victoria, obtaining an electrician's license allows you to perform electrical work without supervision. The main pathway involves completing the following steps:
- Apprenticeship and Education: Complete a four-year apprenticeship and obtain a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.
- Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA): Pass the LEA, which includes both a theory (LET) and a practical (LEP) assessment.
- Supervised Experience: In some cases, you may need 12 months of supervised work under an Electrician (Supervised) Licence before applying for a full licence.
- Registration as an Electrical Contractor: If you wish to run your own electrical business, you must also register as an electrical contractor.
For ongoing compliance, electricians must follow Australian standards and certify their work with Certificates of Electrical Safety (COES). The licence can be valid for up to five years, and fees apply for both application and renewal.
